![]() ![]() Smash has many more options for players willing to delve into the universal mechanics and even techniques unique to their character of choice which is why we love seeing pros demonstrate these in a heated match.ģ. These are some of the more intermediate mechanics that are within the game and this doesn’t even cover techniques such as pivot attacks or short hops and fast falling. We haven’t even covered the mind games that these mechanics can lead to for players either. For players needing an evasive option in the air, you can air dodge in any direction which can let you safely land from aggressive players. Pressing down on the control stick will have characters doing a stylish spot dodge where they’ll stand in place and evade an attack that their foe throws out. These options further extend into rolling which gives characters invincibility frames to dodge incoming attacks. Timing this is tricky as foes can have multi-hitting moves but pulling this off can make for a real spectacle when a player does this mid-match. For defense, if you time your shield and release it the moment an opponent finishes their attack, then you’ll have frame advantage and be able to punish your foe with the parry mechanic. We touched on the various offensive, defensive and movement options and praised them for their ease of use, but Smash manages to take it a step further. It’s important for there to be enough options and mechanics for good players to be able to do well. One quality we value in competition is the ability for players to be able to excel within the game of choice. Smash is basically what happens when you make a platformer into a fighting game and it works deceptively well by bringing familiar conventions into a simple control layout.Ģ. The control scheme alone makes it super easy to get people who are interested in gaming and Esports to just pick up and play. Pressing L or R will have characters bring up a shield to block their opponent and pressing up on the control stick will have characters jump up into the skies. Being able to condense attack options down to two buttons is pretty intuitive from our point of view and this even extends to movement and defensive options as well. The A button is the primary attack button and depending on whether your flick the control stick will determine whether you will get a “smash” attack to launch your opponents off-screen. Every character’s up B functions as their third jump while the other buttons can range from projectiles or super punches or even a counter. The B button lets a character do one of four actions depending on the direction you hold. Smash is a two-button fighter when it comes to its attack options. Smash is heralded as a series that is known for its accessibility and this is largely due in part to the simplicity in its control scheme. ![]()
